The Jeweled Greek Priest

Photo 12 from my trip to the folklore museum in Crete, Greece.

His eyes are so piercing and I just love the jewels he’s wearing. I just recently found out the “jewels” are actually medallions which indicates that he’s a bishop.

  1. He’s a bishop. That’s what those “jewels” (actually medallions) indicate.

  2. The reason why the Episkipos (Bishop) seems to be staring into the camera is indicative of the age of the photograph – probably from the mid 19thC (1850s) when a sitter needed to look into the camera for a very long time in order to ‘fix’ their image etc.
